This Week on The Short Man’s Room - 9/11/09

September 10th, 2009 by jdecator · No Comments

Show # 126 – “Healthy Snacks”

This week we will be deconstructing the U.S. Government Food Pyramid, top to bottom, in our attempt to discern whether it really matters what food we put into our body. I mean, Keith Richard, Anton Newcomb, Patti Smith – all admitted and certified junk food addicts – are still alive, making great music, and looking better than when they were kids, right? So, real research, and thoughtful discussion, is on the agenda this Friday, as I contemplate my commitment to a high metabolism diet, while we groove to the unhealthy madness of Captain Beefheart, the Buzzcocks, Radiohead, David Sylvian, Camper Van Beethoven, and many others who have considered these issues before me. Who knows…maybe we’ll come around to the belief that a healthy diet does promote strong bones and make you grow tall…

What the hell am I talking about? Check it all out this Friday at 1 pm (Chicago time) – 88.9 fm, on the IIT main campus, and streaming live to the entire big fat world at www.radio.iit.edu.

Show # 125 – Om Nama Shivaya

This week, something special: Two hours of chanting; no commercial interruptions, no silly talk from the elfish host.

On second thought, maybe we’ll chat a little about the Bears pre-season.

Join me this Friday at 1 pm (Chicago time) for another round of bliss, darkness, and crazed instability. In the room where the mood is lower than my approval rating, 88.9 fm (on the IIT main campus), and streaming live at www.radio.iit.edu

Show # 124: “Radio Retaliation”

The summer hiatus has ended, and year # 4 finally begins….

You will recall at the end of last season, our pitiless protagonist was being dropped off at the “hospital”, diagnosed with severe exhaustion, auditory hallucinations, and terrifying delusions, including a belief that he was middle-aged, living in the suburbs, and working for the IRS as an undercover Revenue Officer. Scary stuff indeed. Tune in this Friday at 1 pm (Chicago time) to see how/if our reluctant hero gets out of this one. Will he be freed from his Alcatraz by the Cold War Kids, eager to repay their enormous debt? Or will he be destined to broadcast the show from inside the friendly confines of the institution, forever mixing dark psychedelia and mind-numbing jams only for Nurse Cratchett and the Chief?

On your fm dial at 88.9 fm (when visiting the IIT main campus) and broadcasting to the world (for now) on the web at www.radio.iit.edu

Show # 121 – The Boy Who Would be King

In light of the tragic, premature death of cultural icon Ed McMahon earlier this week, I’ll be doing a special tribute on today’s program. Besides musical memories from many of his friends and admirers, I will be playing excerpts from an interview I conducted with Ed when he stopped by the studio to chat in December of 2006.

It promises to be very special; please join me today – Friday - at 1 pm (Chicago time), www.radio.iit.edu

Show # 121 – The Wolf’s Howl

What keeps you up at night ? The sound of animals crying outside your window? Dreams of being late to your last final exam? That post-5 pm Venti coffee? Excitement over the imminent premier of The Half-Blood Prince?

This week, psychotic ramblings from masters of the darkness, designed to keep you awake long into the night, pondering the significance of this life and beyond.

Join me this Friday at 1 pm (Chicago time), 88.9 fm or streaming live and direct at www.radio.iit.edu.

- promising a good time for all,

Show # 120 - “We Just Called Him Jello”

This week, reflections on being a dad, and the father figures in our lives. Mind-expanding grooves and mad liturgy from famous dads Kurt, Lennon and Em, plus lots of lesser-known heroes. Its sappy, sentimental drivel, but I promise enough melancholy to keep you glum all weekend long. And as long as you can dance, would you want it any other way?

Tune in to the live stream this Friday, 1 pm (Chicago time), at www.radio.iit.edu or - if you are strolling in the rain on the IIT main campus with your transistor radio - 88.9 fm.
