Friday, April 11 Show # 82 - The Short Man’s Variety Hour(s)

After last show’s on-air meltdown (did you miss it?), I have been forced by the managing corporation to change formats or leave. So, this week I’ll be mixing it up with some live literary passages (I’ll be reading chapters from The Shortest Spy in Bangkok, my novella in process), the hippest sports talk on the fm dial (we’ll be dissecting the upcoming final weekend of the NCAA), lots of family-friendly positive message music from Paschal Lamb, Testa and Jars of Clay, and even some straight ahead comedy from “The Wrecking Krew”.

Really. Join me this Friday at 1 pm (Chicago time) for a listen to the new and improved show, where - despite the changes - the mood will always remain lower than the ceiling. That’s a promise you can take to your accountant.

Show # 81 – Coming Down to Beijing

I’m back…and the numbers are in: 34 discs, 364 songs, 1.1 days of recorded music I acquired in Beijing. Mostly rock and roll (lots sung in English), but also nice samplings of experimental, folk, pop and electronic madness. Join me this Friday as I spin some highlights, share some cool travel stories, and conduct my call-in contest for listeners to guess 1) how many times did I eat “hot pot” ? and 2) how many times did I do laundry? (hint for both: I was in China fourteen days).

On the air live this Friday, 1 to 3 pm (that’s 2–4 am Saturday in Beijing!) at 88.9 fm on the IIT main campus and streaming out to the rest of the planet at http://radio.iit.edu

Show # 79 – Cinematic Excursions, featuring the enigmatic John Zorn

This week I’ll be offering selections from some of John Zorn’s Filmworks series of releases. Beautiful and dark, they’ll provide a wonderful foreground to whatever shapes you are assuming this Friday afternoon. I’ll also drop in some melancholy and trippy pieces that sound like they should have been in the movies. Join me Friday at 1 pm (Chicago time) for two hours of fun in the frigid sun, at 88.9 fm (IIT main campus) and streaming live at http://radio.iit.edu

After taking a month off, Joel Dubin “The Security Guy”, and I are going to continue our computer security conversations. This evening we are going to talk about web security, more specifically about Web 2.0.
Tune in today 1.24.08 at 6:00PM and listen to some music. At 7:45 The Security Guy and I are going to start our conversation.

show # 78 – Jam in the Name of the Lord

This week, lots of spiritually-infused tunes and improvisations spanning an incredibly diverse range of styles. I’ll play heartfelt pleas from PJ Harvey and M Ward, a faith-based, free jazz offering from Pharaoh Sanders, messianic ex-trospections from the Flaming Lips and Sonic Boom, classic melodic liturgy from George Harrison, and several evangelical love songs surrendering self pity to higher forces. But this isn’t just a show for the believers – I’ll also spin plenty of good old-fashioned heretical rock and roll, suitable for dancing away all your afternoon angst. So put on your Sunday best and huddle ‘round the CPU for two hours of devotion and doubt this Friday at 1 pm (Chicago time) - 88.9 fm on the IIT main campus, and streaming live at http://radio.iit.edu

Show # 77 – “My Serious Problem”

Not exactly sure what it is….so I’m offering free tix to the Cold War Kids if you call in to the studio and give me a clue. But if you’re as lost as I am, just tune in and witness me struggle (semi)publicly for the answer. Like Britney, only with a better soundtrack. Helping me out will be the usual purveyors of melancholy and psychedelia, plus lots of new stuff I got over the holidays guaranteed to warm your brain and make you dance in and around your cubicle. Join me this Friday at 1 pm (Chicago time) at 88.9 fm on the IIT main campus and streaming live at www.radio.iit.edu From the place where the ceiling is low, but the mood is always…uh…hopeful? You betcha.
