Day 2 Dispatch: Music, Moments, and Memories at Pitchfork Festival

@colekincart

Wake up at 9. Jump in Lake Michigan by 10. I’m ready to start my Saturday. Download a picture of the lineup and plan an initial game plan. Bananas and bacon are enough to tide me over for now. Found a picture online of Jai Paul’s setlist during downtime. Needto study this later. Need to be at festival grounds to watch Kara Jackson perform. Worried about overlap with Hotline TNT, but we’ll make it work. Saturday is packed. Feeble Little Horse, Wednesday, Unwound, and Jamie xx.

Kara Jackson delivering a heartfelt performance of songs from her critically acclaimed album, “Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?”

Made it just in time for Kara to go on stage. Happy to see her first Pitchfork Fest performance. Love seeing a Chicago local. Quick bask in the sun before Hotline TNT. Woah. Tons of shredding. Wish I make it to their aftershow performance yesterday after that set. Take a quick break to get water and head to the arts fair. First browse through the arts fair for the day before I go make more potentially financially irresponsible purchases.

Hotline TNT’s guitarist in action, bringing the raw energy of their well-reviewed album “Cartwheel” to the stage. Their gritty performance was a highlight of the day.

Feeble Little Horse, Water From Your Eyes, Wednesday all happening in less than two hours? Three sets? Why did Pitchfork do this to me? Marathon begins.

Feeble Little Horse’s lead singer electrifying the crowd with their dynamic stage presence.

Back to music. Feeble Little Horse is next. Woah. They kill it. Open with “Freak”? Wasn’t expecting that but love it. Can’t wait to catch them on tour soon.

Water From Your Eyes performing tracks from their new album, “Everyone’s Crushed.” The Brooklyn duo, originally from Chicago, brought their experimental pop music, blending silliness and fatalism, to the festival stage.

Still checking the schedule on my phone. Not sure how we’re all gonna make this work. Starting to think there won’t be time for Unwound. I’ll have Matt take a few videos for me.

Fans in camo hats getting lost in the rock intensity of Wednesday’s set.

Back to the green stage for Wednesday. Saw MJ and Karly walking around earlier. Been waiting for this one for a while. Camo hat ratio on Saturday? Pretty unbelievable. Need to start a game to keep count. Is there a correlation between Wednesday fans and camo hats? I’m starting to think so.

Karly of Wednesday, delivering a powerful performance fresh off their summer tour with Unwound.

Need to take video of “Chosen to Deserve” for the backlogs. Loved the steel pedal. Woah, wasn’t expecting this “Women Without Whiskey” cover. MJ on vocals? Sheesh. Starting to think I need a camo hat of my own. “Bull Believer” as the closer? I’ve been waiting for this moment since Rat Saw God came out.

Caught De La Soul. Loved the energy. My hands stay up in the air the entire first three songs. Need more artists like this.

De La Soul, legendary hip-hop icons, energizing the festival with their timeless tracks.

Back to the art fair and poster fair to splurge more. Sarah and Matt (friends of the radio) tag along to get in on the fun.

Sit down, recoup, and put posters away. Need to go see Jessie Ware. Glad to see two high-intensity acts before Jamie. That! Feels! Good!

Love the turnout for Carly Rae. Sun was setting. Hit after hit after hit. Such a memorable performance.

Jessie Ware captivating the crowd with groovy, disco-inspired tracks from her new albums.

Now time for Jamie, the moment Mason and I were waiting for. Is he going to bring out Honey Dijon? What are the first tracks he’d play? As soon as he hit the stage, it didn’t matter.

Jamie xx on stage, previewing tracks from his highly anticipated new album, “In Waves,” set to release in September.

Boom, “Baddy on the Floor.” Second track in. Knew we were in good hands. Loving this “Gosh” reprise. It feels like such a grounding moment after a whirlwind of a set. Knew we were in for something special for the last few songs. “Let’s Do It Again,” such a classic.

Life. You’re giving me life.” Such a strung-out track, truly impressed with the “House of the Rising Sun” sample by Cerrone. How did Jamie sample this? How didn’t I find this song earlier? Such a legend and love Robyn’s addition. The flamenco touch was it! Need to find that track when I get home.

Jamie xx mixing new tracks with crowd favorites like “Gosh” from “In Colour.”

Divvy home. Been a long day but need the divvy ride to centralize the thoughts. Perfect weather.

Maxwell’s pitstop on the way home. Need to refuel.

Back home. “House of the Rising Sun” straight to speakers. Still thinking about Jai Paul, honestly.

Day 2 done. Can’t wait for Sunday.

The crowd with their hands up, fully immersed in De La Soul’s electrifying set. Their performance had everyone moving and grooving.
