The Weather Station performed on Thursday, April 11th, at Lincoln Hall, on tour for their seventh studio album, Humanhood. The crowd felt focused and quiet, anticipating the band’s show, which is appropriate as the band’s album, although impressive, is not a light listen. I listened to the album shortly after it came out in January and felt just as moved hearing it live as i did when first listening to the record
Humanhood is a heavy, emotionally charged album. At times, lyrically and sonically, it’s disorienting yet expansive, creating a body of particularly singular and unique work. The resonance and intensity of the music are evident upon listening, and I was so interested to see how the music’s urgency would translate into a live setting.
When the show starts, it’s hard to ignore how cutting and sharp Tamara Lindeman’s voice is. She sings with her eyes mostly closed or gazing upwards, a small piece of proof of her investment and passion for this project. She softly explains to the crowd how she divided the show into three parts based on how she navigated herself and her thoughts and feelings through the album. Besides the vocals, the band skillfully translated the richness and textural quality of the music that makes the record so immersive.
Songs Body Moves and Mirror were highly anticipated by me and wonderful live. The instrumentation and the ability to execute it live were nothing but impressive. But my favorite of the night was Ribbon, a more gentle yet visceral song on the record. The vocals were stunning and piercing, leaving the venue feeling still in the moment. The whole show felt intentional, appreciated by the audience, and carefully crafted by the band.
The record and show are so special, a body of work built from a special place of vulnerability that makes it more of a piece of art than a simple collection of songs. If you’re looking for an album that’s an experience, one definitely not lacking emotion and rawness, I’d highly recommend giving Humanhood a listen and definitely encourage seeing it live. The Weather Station is on tour until mid-July, finishing their shows throughout the U.S. and Canada.
