Minneapolis’ she’s green makes music that feels like watching light spill across your bedroom. It’s slow, immersive and a bit phantasmic. Somewhere between slowcore, shoegaze and noise-pop (what even are words at this point), the band filters big emotions through hazy shredding and daydream vocals.

Zofia Smith leads the quintet with her blurred and dreamy lyrics, accompanied by Raines Lucas and Liam Armstrong on guitar, Teddy Nordvald on bass, and Kevin Seebeck on the kit. They’re part of the new wave of pedal heavy Midwestern indie acts reshaping tranquility into something loud and intimate. Opening for softcult this past Saturday at Cobra Lounge, they proved why they’re a band to keep both eyes on.

It’s hard to fully describe the she’s green experience, but here’s a few things that I think capture that essence:

  • The distant echo of your very first memory
  • Knowing people who know people who know people
  • A rusting, magenta VW van covered in bright green moss
  • Youth, in all caps and italics
  • Dr. Massey of Slow Pulp (WIIT spring concert ref)
  • Having a friend cut your bangs
  • Peeing in the woods
  • Sharing a bathroom with 3 brothers
  • Intentionally overexposed photos
  • A bumper sticker that says “Honk if you love Chicago”
  • The honk that follows
  • Lucid dreaming
  • Performing from a tree
  • A third cup of coffee
  • A Bad Case of the Stripes by David Shannon
  • Letharthgic backyard shows in the sticky July sun
  • The instant your head hits the water on a perfectly executed swan dive
  • Hot Dog Soup
  • Taking the Amtrak through rural Wisconsin after a visit home
  • Playing hide and seek in an empty park at night (you’re 23 years old)
  • The serenity prayer

Needless to say, she’s green is well worth the divvy bike ride through the overrun West Loop on a Saturday night. The talented group is already making a buzz across the country and with just one EP released, they’re humming with promise and possibility. Or maybe that’s just the sound of all the reverb…

Either way, be sure to catch them on their summer tour with softcult, or this fall on tour with Blondshell. No excuses!
