This past Wednesday, I made my way up to Thalia Hall to catch The Aces on their Gold Star Baby tour, celebrating their new album. Most people probably know The Aces as part of the women-led West Coast indie rock wave, but for me, their music hits a little closer to home.
Originally from Utah County which was not far from where I grew up as a child, The Aces (also formerly known as The Blue Aces) have been on my radar for a long time. I remember seeing them at the Salt Lake Arts Festival years ago while still in elementary school and even once when they opened for Neon Trees back when I was in 5th or 6th grade, too. Later on I stayed a avid fan and had the chance to make a lil’ road trip with my dad and friends and saw them opening up for COIN in Denver in 2018. It’s been such a ride watching them evolve and seeing how far they’ve come makes shows like this one feel like a full circle moment.
Gold Star Baby has easily been one of my 2025 highlights. It slots perfectly into that “All Things Go Festival” universe I’ve been trying to still create a name for but it’s bright, polished, and a little disco-tinged. The record leans into the glamour of the 70s while keeping its lyrical drive and emotional core both modern and sharp. Beneath the singles, there’s a lot more going on and a lot to dig into.
One of my favorites, Twin Flame, really scratched an itch hearing it live. It’s the kind of track that sneaks up on you, where it’s playful on the surface but layered with that bittersweet glow that The Aces have done so well over the last few years. Hearing it surrounded by the band’s consistent chemistry and the Chicago crowd’s energy made it even more infectious!
I’ll let the photos do most of the talking, but Thalia Hall was quite electric for a Tuesday evening. If you get the chance to catch The Aces on their tour, absolutely do it! And maybe take a hint: wear your best Gold Star Baby-inspired fit. You didn’t hear it from me, but they’ve been pulling fans on stage for a celebratory shot.
