Updates to WIIT

January 15th, 2013 by sampson · No Comments

Not only have we updated our site (Request a Show link works again) but we have installed brand new equipment in the station! A new board, rack, recording equipment, turntables/mixer, phone system, mics, and headphone jacks (plus much more ‘under the hood’).

A special thanks to A. Sidney Katz and IIT for helping fund this well needed upgrade. Come check out the station and all we are doing to update and improve WIIT’s presence in the IIT and neighborhood community!

Thanks for reading,
-Kevin M. Sampson

WIIT’s radio host, El Caobo, is a premier tropical music, and especially SALSA/MAMBO, DJ and radio host. He is also an authorized representative of the legendary Fania Records and West Side Latino/Seeco Records labels (salsa’s equivalent to Motown). As such, he has traveled to cities across the United States (including the very cradle… of salsa: New York City) to share what he affectionately calls “salsa de la mata” (grass roots salsa) with clubs filled with very receptive SALSA/MAMBO dancers who yearn for the classic salsa sound! ‘Salsa de la mata’ is a term that El Caobo culled from Jesús Pagán’s album of that very name.

El Caobo currently hosts two fully bilingual radio shows at two different college radio stations: the Illinois Institute of Technology, WIIT, 88.9 FM (10 years) and the University of Chicago, WHPK, 88.5 FM (3 years). Both shows are called Radio Salsa Clásica / El Tornado Tropical con El Caobo and stream live on the internet; as well as air on the FM dial in Chicago. Additionally, El Caobo’s shows are podcasted on Andrés Padua’s renowned Hard Salsa Radio.

Always dedicated to the cause of spreading the popularity of salsa, El Caobo teaches salsa dance classes at IIT!

Also, El Caobo is a professional Spanish-English-Spanish interpreter/translator; with experience as a court interpreter in both criminal and civil matters at the 19th Judicial Circuit Courthouse of Lake and McHenry Counties.

Lastly, but very importantly, El Caobo is also a Spanish teacher, with a degree in “Teaching of Spanish” from the University of Illinois-Chicago and currently teaches Spanish classes at IIT. See http://www.earlhall1.pageout.net/ for more information on Spanish classes.
